RFGimpacts is excited to announce the 2024 SPELBEC Science, designed to inspire elementary, middle, and high school students, especially among the Black community in science and technology. This competition aims to promote academic excellence, critical thinking, and a love for learning among the youth of our community. It will also allow the students to meet and interact with professionals in Winnipeg.

Mayor Scott Gillingham; Mayor of Winnipeg
Scott Gillingham was elected as Winnipeg’s 44th mayor in October 2022 with a mandate to improve city services, invest in infrastructure projects that enhance economic development, and tackle the city’s social challenges like homelessness and crime.
Before being elected mayor, Scott was a two-term city councillor for the St. James ward first elected to Winnipeg City Council in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018.
Before serving on the city council, Scott was a pastor for more than twenty years, most recently at Grace Community Church in Headingley. He and his wife Marla have been married for over 30 years and live in Silver Heights. Together, they have raised two adult children, a daughter Hannah and a son Andrew.
Minister Nello Altomare; Manitoba Minister of Education and Childhood Learning
Nello Altomare was first elected as the MLA for Transcona in 2019. Born, raised and living in Transcona, he is the son of Italian immigrants who came to Canada seeking a better life. Altomare is a former teacher and principal within the River East Transcona School Division. As the official opposition critic for education and early childhood learning, he advocated for high-quality, accessible and better educational support for students.
As an MLA, Altomare passed legislation requiring the education minister to report on nutrition programs in schools. He and his wife are the parents of two children, and he and his family are volunteers with their church and in the local community.
Pastor David Opeyemi is the pastor-in-charge at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House Inner City Outreach, Winnipeg. He is also an author and composer of gospel music. Pastor David is passionate about helping children and teenagers grow in their knowledge of Jesus Christ and excel in all aspects of life. He recently published a book entitled "Popped Balloon," which is targeted towards teenagers.
Furthermore, he has released a music track titled "Mighty God," featuring children and teenagers from his congregation. Pastor David's work aims to help young people understand their identity in God and overcome feelings of inferiority

Biostatistician
Dr. Olawale F. Ayilara, a Biostatistician at the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation, University of Manitoba, is an internationally renowned figure. His research focuses on developing and applying statistical methods in missing data and patient-
reported outcome measures, which has earned him global recognition. As part of his multidisciplinary work. Dr. Ayilara is a key member of a collaborative research group and leads the development and implementation of innovative clinical trial designs.
Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics & Child Health, UM Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba
Dr. Alex Aregbesola is an MD, PhD physician-scientist with CHRIM and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba (UM). Dr. Aregbesola holds an endowed chair in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Aregbesola joined the UM in 2017 after completing a PhD and postdoctoral fellowship in clinical epidemiology in Finland. He later completed another postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Community Health Sciences and George & Fay Yee Center for Healthcare Innovation, UM. He has international work experience in clinical care and research from the United Kingdom, Finland, Ghana, and Nigeria. Dr. Aregbesola received both undergraduate and postgraduate awards. He has over 30 peer-reviewed publications and received local and international grant awards. He is a co-lead on a new research theme at CHRIM - Research into the Enhancement of Acute Care for Children's Health (REACH). Dr. Aregbesola has continued to supervise the research/academic training of medical students, residents, and fellows within the Max Rady College of Medicine.
Research Scientist
Abiola is a research scientist committed to using scientific research to ensure equitable care for all, particularly in cancer and blood disorders. With a background in toxicology research, she transitioned to health equity research inspired by the pandemic's highlight on healthcare disparities and her own experiences as an immigrant. Her current work centers around delivery and implementation science, focusing on optimizing effective healthcare interventions. This aims to bridge the gap between research findings and their practical application to improve health outcomes. Abiola's approach is driven by the conviction that access to equitable healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
Dr. Simone Da Silva Rosa
Scientific Researcher/ Business Development Manager at Toronto Bioscience Inc.
Dr. Simone da Silva Rosa is a cell biology researcher with expertise in the cellular mechanisms of cancer and type 2 diabetes. She earned her bachelor's degree in Nursing from Universidade Federal do Triangulo Mineiro in Brazil. She pursued graduate studies and obtained her Doctoral and Postdoctoral training in the Human Anatomy and Cell Science Department at the University of Manitoba in Canada. Dr. Simone is passionate about learning, teaching, and mentoring younger generations toward an advanced and translational scientific understanding of human health and disease for better patient care. She also applies her scientific knowledge in the research and development industry, working with Toronto Bioscience Inc. as a business development manager. Over the years, Dr. Simone has been recognized with > 50 awards, done > 40 presentations nationally and abroad, and published > 15 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
